Since the growth of research on 2D materials triggered by the synthesis of monolayer graphene in 2004, research and applications of 2D graphene oxide films have been widely carried out, and their good optical and mechanical properties are now used in a variety of applications such as integrated optical components, optical lenses, and solar cells. There are many methods to fabricate graphene oxide films (spin-coating, spraying, layer-by-layer self-assembly, and chemical vapor deposition). The different preparation methods have a great influence on the electrical conductivity, light transmission and homogeneity. As the research progresses, the requirement for ultra-thin graphene oxide films is increasing, and the formation of thin films with controllable monolayer thickness and large area graphene oxide films is critical in various applications. In addition, the requirement for flatness of graphene oxide film directly affects the quality of high precision optical components fabrication. Therefore, the realization of graphene oxide films with high flatness, simple operation and green environment is of high commercial and research value.
Conventional method to fabricate graphene oxide metamaterials is time-consuming and costly. Additionally, it is difficult to control the precise thickness of the films. With graphene’s applications expanding, the requirements for the accuracy, controllability and product stability of the fabrication method are becoming higher and higher. Therefore, the focus must be put on fabricating graphene oxide films with low cost and time-saving operation, while maintaining high accuracy and stable quality of the product.

Graphene oxide films are currently available in thicknesses ranging from 4 nm to 1 micron. For different processing and application needs, the film thickness should be flexibly adjusted in order to maintain an optimum standard for fabrication and measurement, controlling parameters. In general, the recommended thickness for processing optical components is 100nm – 200nm. Meanwhile, Innofocus provide options of selecting thickness gradient to pursue accuracy in scientific data, with general gradient option of 4nm, 20nm, 40nm, 60nm, 80nm and 100nm as a set of gradient indicators; or 4nm, 40nm, 80nm, 120nm, 160nm, 200nm for the optimal thickness gradient criteria. One of the difficulties of graphene oxide film fabrication is to ensure both the size, and the flatness and smoothness of the film at the same time. Innofocus’s fabrication method of GO film has achieved significant improvements in maintaining flatness and smoothness. Large area films, with a maximum diameter up to 12 feet, can still achieve a reliable flatness of less than 5 nm. Currently, the recommended range of sizes is 20mm*20mm to 300mm*300mm.
